TRAVELLING - yea - EXPLORING the Canadian prairies.
Henry Kelsey worked for the Hudson Bay company and was the first european to ever set eyes on the Canadian prairies. ...credit where it's due, but each time I pack up my musical gear and tour through this great land, it's like the first time. Our host and promoter at The Ananda Art House in Forget SK, Shannon, said that driving through this wide open landscape lends itself to 'expansive' thoughts. I find that to be true. The stunning skyshow is itself worth the price of gas on those longhauls between concerts.
This has been a great tour so far (8 concerts played, 4 to go). We are playing folk clubs on three successive Saturday nights (The Lethbridge folk club, The Ananda Art House and the Northern Lights folk club) as well as numerous house concerts, pubs and clubs in between including concerts at The Ironwood Stage and Bushwakkers Pub.
One of the cool things about this tour has been to see some longlost relatives - in Lethbridge, Battleford and Regina. I was born in Saskatoon, so many of my relatives live on the prairies. This explains my primal connection to this land.
Zachari and I wrote a song yesterday about the doomed voyage of the great explorer Henry Hudson (who discovered the Hudson Bay). The song works as a classic sea shanty-type story, but also as a metaphor for our modern day 'captains of industry' whose greed and ambition will also eventually result in mutiny (read: revolution). Zach got us started with a cool melody and progression - along with some lines about the earth sinking like a ship at sea. I had just bought an awesome $5. book on Canadian explorers, so that steered the subject matter.
We will have only a short time at home before we fly to the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario where our touring adventures continue. I hope you can make it out to one of our shows soon.
